그동안 코드명 "WPF/E"로 알려진 Silverlight이 4월 16일 오전 9시(Pacific Time)을 기해
공식적으로 발표 되었습니다.

을 목표로 하고 있는 웹을 위한 새로운 RIA(Rich Internet Application) 솔루션입니다.
크로스 플랫폼, 크로스 브라우져
Silverlight는 Microsoft의 크로스 브라우져, 크로스 플랫폼 플러그인으로 웹을 위한 다음 세대의 미디어 경험과 혁신적인 인터렉티브 어플리케이션을 제공합니다.

Microsoft는 이번 Silverlight의 발표를 미국 최대의 미디어 행사인 NAB2007(National Association of Broadcasters conference) in Las Vegas 에서 발표했다.
Microsoft의 Bob Muglia(senior vice president, Server and Tools Business)는 NAB에서 의미심장한 발언을 했고 그 내용은 다음과 같다.
“Content providers are seeking a way to deliver rich interactive applications using the tools and skills they already have. They want an end-to-end solution that enables them to rapidly reach multiple platforms with reasonable deployment costs,” said Bob Muglia, senior vice president of the Server and Tools Business at Microsoft.
“Microsoft Silverlight delivers on this need and marks a real step forward for the industry. Silverlight is the only solution in the market today that enables content creators to tap into the broad ecosystem for Windows Media® technologies while taking the Web’s rich interactive application experience to new levels.”
Silverlight이 지향하는 곳은 명확하다. Better Web, Better UX를 사용자에게 가장 효율적이고 저렴한 비용으로 전달하는 것. Silverlight을 시작으로 RIA 시장도 분명 "재미있는" 기사가 넘쳐날 것이다.
